• Core Competence: An article in Economic Times has prompted me to address this very interesting concept introduced by C. K. Prahalad, the noted management guru. The Economic Times article reported that Bharti Enterprises of the Airtel fame have announced the formation of a 50:50 joint venture with Singapore based Changi Airport to bid for the privatization of the Delhi and Mumbai Airports. It seemed to me that the Economic Times reporter felt that this diversificatio n by Bharti was not in sink with the concept of core competence. I am assuming that the reporter feels, as most of us do, that the core competence of Bharti is telecom and not airports. This is not true. If a reporter at a leading financial newspaper is not clear about the concept, I am assuming that there are quite a few people out there who would be in the same position. Hence this article.
